Fire Lighting Experiences

At Higher Farm

Enjoy The Magic of Making Fire

Modern & Traditional Fire-Starting Methods

Explore a range of fire-starting tools and discover how each one works:

  • Modern Igniters: Matches, Lighters
  • Metal/Battery Methods: Steel wool + battery, or similar spark-based techniques
  • Flint  & Steel: The classic bushcraft method
  • Convex  Lens: Sun-powered fire lighting (perfect for bright days)

Fuel Types & Their Effects

Fire quality and burn time depend heavily on the type of fuel used. Participants learn how different materials behave when burned:

Common Fuels

  • Wood
  • Coal
  • Charcoal
  • Pine Cones

 Fuel Condition Matters.

  • Dry Wood: Burns hot and cleanly
  • Wet Wood: Smokes heavily and struggles to ignite
  • Fresh (Green) Leaves: Difficult to burn
  • Dry Leaves: Ignite quickly, good for initial flame
  • Wood Shavings: Excellent for early tinder stages

The Concept of Kindling

Kindling is essential for building a fire from a small spark. You’ll learn to identify and prepare perfect kindling from both natural and man-made sources.

Types of Kindling & Tinder

  • Vaseline-coated cotton wool
  • Cotton Wool
  • Old Man’s Beard (Usnea)
  • Sheep’s Wool
  • Dryer Lint
  • Newspaper
  • Tampons (compressed cotton tinder)

Each material reacts differently to flame — we explore which burn hot, long, or fast.

The Fire Triangle

Every fire needs three key elements:

Heat + Oxygen + Fuel

Participants take part in hands-on demonstrations that show how adjusting each part of the fire triangle affects flame behaviour.

Materials for Fire Lighting

All equipment is provided, including:

  • Fire steels
  • Tinders and kindling
  • Fuel samples
  • Safety buckets and extinguishers
  • Fireproof activity areas

A Safe and Engaging Outdoor Experience

Our instructors guide participants through each step, ensuring a safe, fun, and educational session suitable for all ages.
